How Does My Climate Control Work?

For your cabin to be cooled down to comfortable levels, your vehicle uses an AC system to alter the humidity and temperature in your cabin to levels that are comfortable for you and your passengers. To accomplish this, your AC system uses several different components to take in and recondition the existing cabin air. The three major components that do most of the work in your AC system are an evaporator, condenser, and compressor. Your AC also has a chemical refrigerant that circulates through the system to make your cabin comfortable. When the refrigerant circulates through the system, it cycles between a liquid and a gas. Your evaporator draws heat and humidity from the air in your cabin where it then flows beneath the hood to the condenser. Once it arrives, a cooling fan cools off the air and recirculates it back into the cabin as cool, fresh air.
The refrigerant in your AC system is the key to the cooling process. If any holes or cracks develop in any part of your AC system, the coolant will leak out and that renders the system virtually useless, because then all it does is circulate warm moist air or hot humid air into your cabin. The problem with this refrigerant is that the chemical is virtually colorless and odorless, so it is not easy to spot upon inspection. Some signs will help you to figure out that your AC has a leak or there is some other problem that prevents it from working correctly.
  • Warning Lights: Not all vehicles can tell you that you have a problem with your AC, but some indicator lights may provide indication. Sometimes an AC problem may show up as a check engine light, or just a light on your dashboard that doesn’t clearly spell out the problem. It is best to check the section of your owner’s manual that addresses what dashboard warning lights mean.
  • Warm or hot air ushering out from your vents: This is likely the most obvious sign of AC trouble if you have your AC set on its coolest setting and you are getting warm air instead of cool air coming from the vents.
  • Clicking: If you are running your AC and you hear this sound, it can indicate that your AC is running a short cycle. It usually means your compressor’s cycle is being cut short because of problems.
